Who comes to mind when you think about people who have been influential in your faith life? The Christian faith is—and always has been—a shared faith. Biblical and personal stories of God’s faithfulness are passed down from generation to generation, drawing new believers to God and bolstering the faith of his people. For the last fifteen years, Groundwork has explored Scripture with you each week, continuing to tell the stories of who God is and what he has done. Join Groundwork for our series, “A Legacy of Faith: Celebrating Groundwork’s 15th Anniversary,” as we examine Scripture to understand the biblical foundation for establishing and passing on legacies of faith, and to celebrate what God has done through Groundwork.

Faith Legacies in the Bible

God often identifies himself as “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” (e.g. Exodus 3:15, Acts 7:23). The earliest stories about God demonstrate his continuing faithfulness to his people, from one generation to the next. In these stories, we witness the long-lasting impact of God’s work in the lives of his people and the gift that faith in God and a relationship with him becomes to subsequent generations.

The Bible tells us to be intentional about sharing and passing on our faith. Moses tells the Israelites in Deuteronomy to actively participate in faith practices and tell their children (Deuteronomy 6:4) and God makes it possible for the Israelites to cross the Jordan on dry ground, he also has them set up a stone memorial, giving them an opportunity to talk about the good things God did from them whenever someone asked about it (Joshua 4:1-9).

Studying these passages helps us understand how the legacies of faith left by the cloud of witnesses (Hebrews 12:1) have formed and shaped us. They teach us how we would live and the important role we have in that legacy of faith by continuing to tell and share the stories of who God is and what he has done.

 Groundwork’s Legacy of Faith

Recognizing, celebrating, and honoring the legacies of faith is one way we give glory to God for what he has done in our lives and pass on our faith to the next generation. We often think of legacies as past, something to reflect on once a life is over. But we don’t need to wait until something is finished or over to acknowledge God’s work and faithfulness. That’s why here at Groundwork, we’re grateful to reflect on our legacy of faith as we celebrate our fifteen-year anniversary.

In the past fifteen years, Groundwork has expanded its reach and its available resources. You can read about where we came from and how we started in the blog “Groundwork Celebrates 15 Years,” but we remain committed to digging deeply into Scripture and discussing how God’s Word continues to apply to us today.

Receive and Pass on Faith

Your faith in God is a living legacy. I invite you to discover the importance of receiving the faith passed down to us and our role in passing it on to future generations through our Groundwork series, “A Legacy of Faith: Celebrating Groundwork’s 15th Anniversary”:

Together, we’ll celebrate and give thanks to God for his faithfulness and consider how we can intentionally live our legacies of faith now in our daily lives.
