Trusting God in the Midst of Change

Once, during my service in the US Navy, a chief petty officer said to me, “Change is like a freight train. Jump on or get hit.” Boy, did he have that right. In my lifetime, change has been a constant. Nowadays, it seems like our world is changing right in front of our eyes: we’re witnessing cultural, social, and even environmental changes in real time. Many of these changes feel alarming and can cause us to worry. In our worry, we tend to drop God out of the equation. We get ourselves all worked up with stress and anxiety before finally remembering that God has not left us alone in the world.
The unchanging nature and character of God is another constant in our lives. I have a life verse that I sometimes forget when I start worrying about political, social, and environmental issues: “O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things planned long ago” (Isaiah 25:1 NIV 1984). I believe God showed me this verse during the massive personal upheaval of unwanted divorce and single parenthood that I struggled through more than 20 years ago. With this verse, God anchors me against the ebb and flow of our changing world with the solidity of his own faithfulness.
